Spot pressure tactics, copied listings and changed bank details. A practical checklist for checking a Bali villa rental before sending money.

The short answer
Verify the property, the person offering it, their authority to rent it and the payment recipient separately. Prefer an identifiable registered company such as CHB over an anonymous account, but still check every agreement and payment request.
Two freelance-agent payment traps to watch for
One risk when booking from abroad is sending a deposit to someone presenting themselves as a freelance agent, then arriving to find their phone number inactive and no reservation in your name. Attractive photographs and a friendly video call are not enough. Before paying, independently confirm the property, the representative’s identity and the person authorised to reserve it. Keep an alternative arrival plan if those checks cannot be completed.
Another scenario is paying an intermediary who never passes the money to the owner. You may hold a transfer receipt while the owner has no payment and has not confirmed your stay. Establish in writing who may collect the money, how payment to that person fulfils your obligation, and how the reservation is acknowledged. Where an agent collects on an owner’s behalf, seek confirmation through an independently verified owner or authorised management contact—not just another number supplied in the same unverified chat.
These are warning scenarios, not a claim that all freelance agents are dishonest or that every missing payment proves fraud. Administrative errors and disputes can also occur. The safeguard is a documented, verifiable payment chain. Working through an identifiable registered company such as CHB gives you business details to check and a named contact, but the same property, authority and payment checks still apply.
Treat urgency as a reason to pause
A message saying that another guest will pay in ten minutes is not evidence that a rental is genuine. If the offer combines an unusually attractive price, pressure to transfer immediately and refusal to answer basic questions, pause. Ask for the villa reference, dates, full price, deposit terms and the identity of the contracting party in writing. A real deadline does not remove the need for those checks.
Compare the photographs and description across the channels you have used. Reused images or different prices deserve an explanation, although neither alone proves fraud. Arrange a viewing, or a live video walkthrough with someone you can independently identify. Ask to see the entrance, rooms and facilities in a continuous call rather than accepting another polished recording.
Check the sender and recipient independently
Open the company website yourself rather than following a payment link from a new message. Contact the team through the details published there and confirm the person handling your booking. A familiar logo, social-media following or copied registration document does not establish that the sender represents the business.
Before transferring, compare the beneficiary with the written agreement and invoice. An owner may legitimately receive rent directly, but an unexpected third-party account requires a clear, independently confirmed explanation. If bank details change, stop and reconfirm through the previously verified contact channel. Never share a banking password or one-time security code to secure a villa.
Act quickly if something has gone wrong
If you suspect a fraudulent transfer, contact your bank or payment provider immediately through its official channel. Preserve the listing, conversation, invoice and transaction receipt. Do not send another payment to release a refund, unlock funds or pay someone promising guaranteed recovery.

Follow its current reporting instructions and ask your bank and the relevant authorities about appropriate next steps. Reporting does not guarantee recovery. Be wary of imitation reporting sites and do not post identity documents or full account details publicly.
